Mr. S.P. Oswal was born in 1942. He holds a Masters Degree in Commerce with Gold Medal from Punjab University, Chandigarh. The phenomenal growth Vardhman Group has achieved in the last four decades, has been possible solely because of his charismatic leadership. The Group employs about 25, 000 people and its presence is felt throughout India. Vardhman Group today has the largest yarn manufacturing capacity in the country with over 8, 50, 000 spindles. It also has one of the largest fabric weaving plants and also has one of the most modern state of the art fabric processing facility in the country. Apart from this, he had even set examples for others and hence has helped in rapid industrialisation during the post liberalization period.

One of the social achievement of his career is the first village cluster adoption programme. Mr. S.P. Oswal's initiative to improve the yield of cotton in Punjab in 2001, when the state had suffered a crop devastation and the area under cotton cultivation was dwindling, he adopted villages to see whether concerted efforts in bringing knowledge to farmers could improve the yield of cotton. The experiment was successful as it improved the yield of cotton in the State of Punjab.

Mr Oswal believes in the power of youth. He believes if the youth are equipped to be self-reliant, they could build up a career on merit. Training programmes for the youth of socially under privileged students have been run for the last three years. As a result, nearly 200 students have got employment.

Mr Oswal believes that every corporate house has a social responsibility. This commitment towards the society has resulted in setting up of educational and research institutions in Ludhiana, Baddi and a new school at Budhni in Madhya Pradesh. He believes education is incomplete if assessment of a student is limited only to the marks obtained. Drawing the philosophy of Sri Aurobindo, he initiated practices for the introduction of holistic development of human beings. This principle is religiously followed at Sri Aurobindo College of Commerce and Management in Ludiana and in Sri Aurobindo Public School, Baddi and Budhni.
